Water and Life, by Adolph Caso, Illustrated with original photos, Paperback (8.50 x 12) ISBN 9780828326629 $25; Paperback (6 x 9) ISBN 9780828326636 $15; E-Book ISBN 9780828326612 $9.99 Adolph (Adolfo) Caso could be considered a prolific writer in view of the fact that he has published more than 30 books in addition to twelve online interactive courses on the Internet. Yet, his background could not have warranted such successes. Having survived World War II, he came to America at the age of twelve--non-English-speaking and semi-lingual—he only spoke the local dialect outside Naples. He completed first grade in his native; six years later he was admitted to the sixth grade in America where he learned English and later standard Italian. He graduated from the public schools and received degrees from Northeastern and Harvard University. In addition, he completed several military schools, having attained the rank of Colonel. He taught foreign languages in a large school system where he created and became the director of the bilingual department K-12. In reading his poems--either in English or in Italian—no translations, one is quick to see his fluency in the two languages. Furthermore, he enhances his poems with photos that capture and retain visual moments that otherwise can easily disappear from our consciousness. Certainly, his war experience wherein he was on the receiving end of rifle bullets, or of machine-gun fire from the air, or avoiding bombs—these experiences are not behind his avowed pacifism. Behind it are the actions of one man against the other man. That’s what drives his poetry—Suicide through murder!. Yet, in the end, love becomes the redeeming force. As in all human beings, life cycles itself between two negative and positive poles from birth to death. In his, My Circumference, he deals with the absence of divinity. In his, Measuring Immanence, he discovers the presence of a divinity which turns itself into a non-evolutionary counter but redemptive evolvement. Here are a few examples: From The Empty Nest: /…Russell and Sartre: //Two Marxist would-be warriors//Joined together//On behalf of peace//Conditioned by their ideology//At the expense of millions//Of innocent victims//To grease the wheels of their unfeeling//Human-made killing machines./ Or, from B-17 Pre-Flight: /…In no time//I fell into//Her bountiful arms//And love-making//Was never as sweet//As it was blissful//Especially now//At seventy four./ Yet, when a little girl unexpectedly gives him three M & Ms from her paper bag, the impact on his psyche was overwhelming: Three M & Ms: …The palate satisfied//The sweetness of the chocolate//Reaching my heart,//The miracle defined!//In a moment//and//in my silence//True happiness left its mark.//That night, the miracle continued://Falling asleep//was never as sweet;//Falling asleep//was never as deep!
